Please call the synagogue office, (703) 425-1880, when a
death occurs. Our rabbis are here to help you in every way possible, and
one of those ways is to assist you with information regarding funeral
customs and arrangements.
If the death occurs after office hours, or on Shabbat or a
holiday, call (703) 352-5384; the answering service will take your
information and contact the rabbi. Please understand that if it is
Shabbat or a holiday, the rabbi will call you immediately after the
holiday. In the meantime, you may get in touch with the funeral home,
which is available 24/7.
The funeral home will need to know the names, birth date
and social security number of the deceased, as well as parents' names,
mother's maiden name, the name of the cemetery with the section and plot
number, and all pertinent information for an obituary notice. Though a
number of funeral homes serve the Jewish community, Olam Tikvah has a
relationship with the Jefferson Funeral Home, (703) 971-7400, that
guarantees traditional Jewish funeral practices as well as financial
benefits to OT members.
Our caring community is there for comfort at this difficult
time. We will offer ritual support by providing tahara (ritual washing
of the deceased) and shomrim (people to "watch" or "guard" the deceased
at the funeral home), and making sure that there is a minyan during
Shivah.
