Wednesday, February 3

Approaches to Prayer, 7:30pm-9:15pm. Taught by Rabbi Shalva. Sessions continue on Wednesdays, February 24, March 3 & 10. Why do we pray? How can we find more meaning in prayer? Together we will explore how Judaism's great teachers of tefilah, from the Torah to modern day Jewish philosophers, have answered these questions. Their words of wisdom will not only enlighten our minds, but will deepen our prayer lives, as well.

Sunday, February 7

World Wide Wrap, Join Jews around the world in laying t'fillin.  Bring your own, or borrow ours.  Don't worry if you don't know how--we can help.

Help Prevent Hypothermia. Volunteers are needed Sunday night. Please join other OT members at the overnight hypothermia shelter at Lord of Life Lutheran Church. There are professional staffers and other volunteers from OT on the premises at all times so this is a safe environment to help keep the homeless company and safe from the cold temperatures on the streets. Please contact Eric Rothberg at ericandrachel@verizon.net or 703-425-8120, if you have questions and/or are interested in volunteering for this huge mitzvah.

Sunday, February 14

Snow Tubing Trip for 6th-12th Graders, 12:00pm-7:00pm. Come with us to White Tail Resort for an afternoon of snow tubing! Cost for tube rental, lift, and run fees: $23; transportation costs depend on the number attending. We'll leave OT at 12 noon and return at 7:00pm. Bring a dairy lunch; snacks will be provided during our return. RSVP to youth@olamtikvah.org before Thursday, February 4. All participants must turn in a signed Tubing Release form. More details about transportation arrangements and costs will be communicated when RSVPs are received.

Rosh Chodesh Adar, 7:00pm-8:00pm. Sisterhood member Roz Sloan, who has done extensive research on the book of Esther, will share her learning with the women of OT Sisterhood in honor of the upcoming celebration of Purim. National Symphony Orchestra, 9:00am. Sisterhood is invited to attend a National Symphony Orchestra Rehearsal at the Kennedy Center Concert Hall. The program includes Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto #2, Tchaikovsky Symphony #4, and Auerbach Requiem for Icarus. Meet at OT at 9:00 am to carpool. Judaism is for Lover's II Party, 8:00pm, at Olam Tikvah.  Fun and music - Twist Contest with prizes -  Line Dance Clinic - Silent Auction.  Cost: $18/person includes hors d'oeuvres and desserts.  Soft drinks, wine, beer, and "Kickapoo Joy Juice" available for purchase.  Purchase tickets with a check mailed to and payable to Olam Tikvah Men's Club; reserve an entire table for all your friends!  Proceeds go to Men's Club's tzedakah projects.

Women's League Institute Spring Semester, 7:30pm- 9:00pm. Women's League for Conservative Judaism in conjunction with the Jewish Theological Seminary presents a program of continuing education for Conservative Women. Sessions will be led by Abigail Kogen, Coordinator of Congregational Education at Chizuk Amuno in Baltimore. The topic will be "Our Heralded Female Heroes" and will explore the power, faith, and strength of female heroes in the Bible. Tuition is $60. Please RSVP by February 15. Shabbat Study Group: Newcomers Always Welcome, 7:15pm.  Join us at the home of Eric and Rachel Rothberg, where Eric will lead a discussion on the Jewish case for interfaith dialogue, why we need it more than ever, the potential pitfalls, and how to make it a more valuable experience. Skeptics are welcome. Eric has been an OT steering committee representative to Fairfax's Interfaith Communities for Dialogue for the past four years. He also works in the counter-terrorism field. ABBA’s Fifth Annual Texas Hold'Em Poker Tournament, 7:00 pm (note date change).  Please join us for a relaxing evening at Olam Tikvah as we play cards to benefit Olam Tikvah’s Carol Samuels Memorial Youth Fund, which provides need-based scholarships for Jewish camping and travel. Refreshments will be provided and prizes will be awarded to the first, second and third place winners. Surprise awards have also become a tradition. Cost: $36, payable at the event, will cover all refreshments, supplies, prizes and proceeds to be donated. Olam Tikvah Chorale Cabaret: Songs of Love, Note rescheduled date: Sunday, March 14, 7:30pm. Join us for a heartwarming evening, with songs about newfound love, longtime love and love of Israel. Several of your favorite performers from Jews Still Rock concert will perform at the cabaret also. More detail can be found in the January Contemporary. Costs: $18/person which includes wine, cheese & sweets.

Wednesday, March 17

The Journey of the Seder, 7:30pm-9:15pm. Taught by Rabbi Shalva. Sessions continue on Thursday, March 18, Tuesday, March 23, and Wednesday, March 24. Mah Nishtana HaLila HaZeh? We've sat around the Seder Table many times, but how well do we truly understand the Haggadah's message? Join Rabbi Shalva for an in-depth study of the Haggadah. From the four sons to the ten plagues, from the Hillel Sandwich to Hallel, we will analyze the Seder's journey and prepare to experience our own Seders with deeper appreciation and understanding.

Torah Fund Campaign High Tea, 3:30 pm. Please come celebrate Women's League for Conservative Judaism Seaboard Region Area-Wide Torah Fund Campaign High Tea at Congregation Har Shalom in Potomac, MD. The topic of tea will be "Love in the time of Halacha - How I met and married my b'shert at JTS." JTS clergy who married other JTS clergy share the joys and challenges of finding, dating, and marrying their spouses.
