Interfaith Dialogue; "Our Faith and Ethics: Grappling with the Economic Crisis,"
Wednesday, May 13, 6:30pm-9:30pm, at John Calvin Presbyterian Church, 6531 Columbia Pike, Annandale. Olam Tikvah is cosponsoring this interfaith dialogue.
Local clergy, including Rabbi Shalva, will represent their various faith perspectives on this timely issue, and then attendees will break into small-group dialogues.
The clergy will address questions, such as: How do our faiths’ guidance on ethical behavior and business ethics
help us deal with the negative behaviors that caused the current economic situation? How can these lessons help us move forward as a community?
How do our respective faiths balance individual gain (and prosperity) with communal responsibilities?

Mishnah Study,
Wednesdays, 9:15-10:15am, with Rabbi Kalender. Study
and discuss this first Jewish code that formed the foundation of Jewish
ethics, ritual and theology with Rabbi Kalender. No prior knowledge
necessary, and the English translation is used. First class of the year
will be Wednesday, October 29. New students welcome at any time.

Rabbi Shalva’s Summer Sampler, Wednesdays, June 24-July 22, 7:30pm-9:15pm. Have you ever wanted to try studying a page of Talmud? Ever
wondered what the Kabbalah is really about? Interested in reading steamy love poetry written by the great medieval Spanish rabbis? If so, this course is for you! Each week

Shabbat Dinner and Study Group: Newcomers always welcome! Friday, May 15, 7:15pm. Eric and Rachel Rothberg will host
the next Shabbat Study Group, and Eric will lead the discussion of the week's Torah portion, Behar/Bechukotai, covering the sabbatical and jubilee years, caring for the poor,
and G-d's rewards and punishments. No Torah study experience, Hebrew knowledge, or advance reading necessary. Our dynamic multigenerational group offers a delicious
vegetarian/fish Shabbat dinner each month at a member's home and a diversity of topics to feed the mind. We draw from the entire OT community: singles and couples of all
ages, families with kids, older members, long-time members, new members, and people with a range of knowledge levels. Please contact Eric, (703) 425-8120 or

Hebrew, Tuesday evenings, beginning
December 9 (note date change). Karyn Selko returns as our instructor for Hebrew language courses.
This season, Karyn will offer Introductory Hebrew, from 7:00pm-8:00pm and
Intermediate Hebrew from 8:15pm-9:15pm (immediately following minyan). If you are interested in either class, please contact Karyn at

15th Annual World of Hope Golf Classic,
Wednesday, May 20, honoring Rabbi Itzhaq Klirs and
supporting OT’s Scholar-in-Residence Fund. Scholar-in-Residence Devotees:
Honor your loved ones and special occasions.
Sponsor a hole at the 15th
Annual World of Hope Golf Classic.
You will receive a picture of your sign, which will be prominently
displayed during the event, and a tax write-off for your donation.
This golf tournament is the principal fund raiser for OT’s Adult
Education/Scholar-in-Residence Fund.

Olam Tikvah Pre-College Program, monthly,
Sundays, 6:00pm-8:00pm. Rabbi Shalva will teach a class for our 11th & 12th
graders on February 1, March 1, March 29, May 31. The class will be held at his home and snacks served. Please make sure to RSVP to
Rabbi Shalva to let him know if your 11th or 12th grader is planning
to attend some or all of the sessions. For more information, contact Rabbi

Sisterhood
Spring Brunch and General Membership Meeting, May 17,
9:30am. We will vote on
changes to the bylaws (which are footnoted in the document) at our General Membership meeting.
Please contact Rochelle Goldberg by Friday, May 8, with any questions or
comments about changes to the bylaws. Any questions must be submitted to
Rochelle ahead of time as questions will not be entertained from the floor about
the proposed bylaws at the meeting. Cost: $6.
Social Action
Casserole Collection. Wednesdays, 4:00pm-8:30pm on May 20 and June 17, 2009.
There is NO casserole collection in April due to Pesach. We need help providing casseroles to SOME, an
interfaith, community-based organization that exists to help the poor
and homeless of our nation's capital. Deliver casseroles (preferably
frozen) to the synagogue on the listed dates. The
recipe is available on our web site.
Sukkot in Spring, Sunday, April 26. Please mark your calendars for our annual Sukkot in April,
when we will repair a home in our community. Volunteers are needed for three
shifts: morning (8:00am-noon), afternoon (noon-4:00pm), and clean-up
(4:00pm-7:00pn). If you have no skills but you're willing to help, you
are needed. Skilled volunteers are welcomed, too! Please e-mail Eric Rothberg at
ericandrachel@verizon.net. All adults are eligible, as well as
teenagers 14 years old and above, accompanied by an adult.
