Class News - April 15, 2008
Last Sunday was our school Pesach workshop. Grades 4,5, and
6 circulated among their three classroom stations to review what they know about
Pesach and to learn new background and customs. In the grade 4 rooms,
students worked on Pesach puzzles.
In our grade 5 pods, the students learned about the art of
the four children. We looked at the way the four children are presented,
and what it means to be wise, wicked, simple, or unable to ask a question. The
students learned about the source of the four children, from verses in the
Torah. They then looked at art from haggadot from the past decades and even
centuries. After considering how other artists represent the "four
children" (often as adults or non-human figures) the students created their own
images. They have a booklet to bring home as well as their artistic creations.
In grade 6, the students learned about different seder
customs from different cultures. They were given Sephardic charoset
recipes to bring home.
Over the past several weeks, our students have practiced
prayers wonderfully! They have done an excellent job learning the Torah
service, as well as learning many of the prayers from the Musaf service for our
School Shabbat on May 17. Please encourage them to practice at home.
In Judaics, the students spent time learning about Joseph,
and how the ancient Hebrews came to be in Egypt. We read about Joseph in our
Etz Hayyim Chumashim, learning about his character and how he ended up in a
position of power in Egypt. We then read about the immediate aftermath of
the Exodus, when Moses and Miriam both sing after the Israelites escape the
Egyptians and the sea closes over the Egyptian army, with their horses and
chariots. The students illustrated a verse they chose from the Song of
Moses or the Song of Miriam in their Judaics Journals.
Shula and Andrea wish you and your families a happy and
kosher Pesach.
