Rabbi Kalender's Greeting
As
we look back over Jewish history, we recognize that a healthy and vibrant
community defined itself as more than a group of people living in
proximity to each another. Those who made themselves part of one of these
vital assemblies shared much more than a zip code.
People gathered to
pray, study, sing and dance, remember loved ones and celebrate the beauty
of life. They recognized that their sense of togetherness was more than a
matter of convenience and that the group was an entity whose sum was far
greater and stronger than its individual parts. When they formalized their
association and built a beit k'nesset (synagogue), they referred to it as
a k'hilah k'doshah, a sacred community.
Congregation Olam
Tikvah is a k'hilah k'doshah. 3800 Glenbrook Road is a place where people
assemble to pray, to learn, to socialize and to mourn. It is a home in
which people strive to locate within themselves divine sparks and to share
those sparks with others, so that God's light will illuminate the world.
Those sparks are found within each and every individual who allows them to
shine forth.
Join us as we, the
members of this k'hilah k'doshah, continue to support each other in the
holy task of living b’tzelem elohim (in God’s image) and enjoying our
sacred community.
Shalom,
Rabbi David Kalender
