Shir HaLev: The Community Jewish Chorale of Northern Virginia

Shir HaLev, “song of the heart,” aptly describes the heart and soul that the dozen or so singers put into each of their musical presentations. Their repertoire consists mainly of Jewish liturgical music, some contemporary Jewish music and some secular showtunes, too.

Shir HaLev sings at several Shabbat evening services at Greenspring Village, interfaith concerts in Fairfax and the greater DC area, and community events, such as the Pozez JCCNV’s annual menorah lighting at the Mosaic District. Membership is to be open to both OT congregants and others who wish to sing Jewish music.

Rehearsals are held at Olam Tikvah on selected Tuesday evenings 7:30-9:00pm. The emphasis is on fun and friendship. Hence, the group also holds an annual Chanukah potluck and occasional other informal get-togethers during the year.

If you’d like to try out for the Chorale, please feel free to attend a rehearsal or two to see if you find group singing—which has been shown to improve both physical and emotional health—a good fit for you.

For questions or to schedule a tryout, contact Music Director, Carol Boyd Leon, at (703)338-7631 or cboydleon@gmail.com. Male singers are especially needed, but all voice parts are welcomed with open arms. Annual dues are $100, and all music is provided.
