Debra Beland Ackerman, Director of Education and Youth Activities
Debra grew up in a vibrant Conservative synagogue in Miami, FL that was founded by her parents. She is also the product of the Jewish camping movement, spending over a dozen years at Camp Blue Ridge as a camper, counselor, and unit head. She is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where she taught religious school in a local congregation. After moving to Virginia, Debra began her career as a Jewish educator, working in both synagogues and the JCC movement before coming to Congregation Olam Tikvah in 2010.
Debra is a past chair of the Jewish Educators Council of Greater Washington and continues to sit on their executive committee, and she also serves on the Education Directors Council of Northern Virginia. She spends her summers at Camp Ramah in New England as Rosh Omanut (director of the art program). Debra lives in Fairfax with her husband, Rabbi Joshua Ackerman, her three children, and her two beagles.
