Little River Turnpike Historical Marker Discussion

Tuesday, June 8, 2021 28 Sivan 5781

8:30 PM - 9:30 PMZoom

Join us for a presentation by Dr. Benjamin Skolnick, Archeologist with the Office of Historic Alexandria, on the domestic slave trade in this area. Dr. Skolnik has been assisting OT congregant Gary Krauss on a proposed Historical Marker on Little River Turnpike to recognize the forced migration of enslaved people along that road.

Last year, Olam Tikvah, along with several other churches and organizations, sponsored a proposed historical marker on 236 to recognize the forced migration of enslaved people taken from the Chesapeake Bay region during the 1800s along Little River Turnpike, which was a major route used by slave traders in Alexandria to move men, women, and children through Fairfax on a 1,000-mile journey over land and water to the cotton fields of the Deep South.

Register below to receive the Zoom link to learn more about the history of 236 and the historical marker.
