Little River Turnpike Historical Marker Discussion
Tuesday, June 8, 2021 • 28 Sivan 5781
8:30 PM - 9:30 PMZoomJoin us for a presentation by Dr. Benjamin Skolnick, Archeologist with the Office of Historic Alexandria, on the domestic slave trade in this area. Dr. Skolnik has been assisting OT congregant Gary Krauss on a proposed Historical Marker on Little River Turnpike to recognize the forced migration of enslaved people along that road.
Last year, Olam Tikvah, along with several other churches and organizations, sponsored a proposed historical marker on 236 to recognize the forced migration of enslaved people taken from the Chesapeake Bay region during the 1800s along Little River Turnpike, which was a major route used by slave traders in Alexandria to move men, women, and children through Fairfax on a 1,000-mile journey over land and water to the cotton fields of the Deep South.
