Chanukah Mystery Mensch Sign Up
Tuesday, October 26, 2021 • 20 Cheshvan 5782
All Day for 10 DaysBring some light to a congregant’s Chanukah celebration this year with Olam Tikvah’s Mystery Mensch card and gift exchange! Sign up to secretly send a Chanukah greeting to a fellow Olam Tikvah member, and you’ll be surprised with something special during the holiday from a Mystery Mensch, as well. (If you just want to receive a secret greeting, that’s okay, too).
The exchange is coordinated by the Olam Tikvah Membership Committee, which is dedicated to spreading holiday joy and building community.
Here’s how it works:
- Households can sign up through November 5 to participate in this fun holiday activity, either as a Mystery Mensch, a recipient, or both.
- Mystery Mensches will receive their recipient’s name(s) by November 16.
- To participate, please deliver a Chanukah gift to your assigned recipient(s) during Chanukah (November 28-December 6). Gifts can include homemade cards, small gifts, pre-packaged hechshered food (cookies, tea, candy), or a creative idea of your own. If you are feeling extra enthusiastic, you are welcome to send or drop off multiple gifts (no more than $20 total, please) to your recipient throughout the week, as well. Be creative and have fun!
- Check your mail and doorstep each day of the holiday to see if your Mystery Mensch has left a secret surprise for you.
- Reveal date and details will be announced during Chanukah.

The Fast of the Firstborn (Ta’anit Bechorim) commemorates the horrific tenth plague that God inflicted on Pharaoh and the Egyptian people. In recognition of this moment, firstborn Jews fast on Erev Pesach. As this is a minor fast, there is a widely practiced exemption: Judaism allows anyone who attends a religious feast to forego fasting. It is customary to hold a celebratory meal on the completion of study of a piece of text, called a siyyum (conclusion). Whether you are a firstborn relieving yourself from the pre-Pesach fast, or anyone else simply looking to learn a little, come join us for the siyyum. After the siyyum, we will celebrate with a light breakfast. -
