"Judaism and Digital Culture; Exploring Media Use, Community Building, and Representation in a Modern Digital Environment"

In the 21st century, we are no longer passive observers of media; we decide when and what we watch, read, and listen to in a digital world. What are the implications, benefits, and hazards for modern Jews in these spaces? These talks will explore the following:

March 27 - How Jewish digital communities are built and maintained online, what challenges these spaces and users face, and how identity building takes place via this digital culture, humor, and the “meme-ification” of modern Jewish experiences.

April 3 - How the “streaming wars” have led to more Jewish representation in fictional, entertainment content, and how this impacts audiences

Dr. Jennifer Billinson is an Assistant Professor of Media Studies at Christopher Newport University. She studies digital culture and has published research on social media use, the use of entertainment media after tragedy, and digital media representation. Dr. Billinson received her undergraduate degree at Indiana University and earned her PhD in Mass Communication at Syracuse University. She is also a proud graduate of Olam Tikvah Preschool and Hebrew School.
