Seaboard Region Education Day: Remembering the Holocaust through the Lens of Music, Art and Literature

Sunday, March 12, 2023 19 Adar 5783

10:30 AM - 1:15 PMZoom (Note that we turn the clocks forward that day for Daylight Savings Time. Don't be late!)

We look forward to learning with Dr. Rachel Korazim and Mr. Emanuel Abramovits at our 2023 Seaboard Region Education Day as we explore this year's topic: Remembering the Holocaust through the Lens of Music, Art and Literature.

Echoes of the Holocaust in Israeli Poetry & Prose

Through poetry and other literary texts, we will explore how the survivors of the Holocaust and their descendants tried to overcome the silence surrounding an unimaginable and incomprehensible crime against humanity. We will gain a deeper understanding of how the Shoah continues to influence Israeli society today.

Dr. Rachel Korazim is an internationally renowned Israeli lecturer who invites listeners to engage with Israel and the Holocaust in an innovative way. Since 1990, she has invested a lot of time and energy to helping the emerging Jewish schools of Hungary. She also teaches at Israel’s well-known learning centers including Pardes and the Shalom Hartman Institute.

Music & the Holocaust

This session will address the role that music played in the struggle for hope in those dark times. We will hear stories about the artists who died in the Holocaust, about others who survived, and about the instruments that have been restored. And, of course, we will hear excerpts of the magnificent music these artists composed and played.

Emanuel Abramovits has been a concert promoter since 2000, working with global artists, such as Itzhak Perlman, Gustavo Dudamel, and Kenny G. He served as the Cultural Director at UNION ISRAELITA DE CARACAS for ten years, documenting Holocaust survivors’ stories, and organizing cultural events. Since 2020, he has been lecturing on Zoom about the contributions Jews have made to music from classical to Broadway, and everything in between.

This event will be paid for by contributions we requested from Seaboard Region Affiliates/Sisterhoods. Individual donations of $10 would be welcomed to support scholarships to WL Convention. If you are inclined to donate, please mail a check, payable to Seaboard Region, to our Treasurer, Tami Fine:  2101 Harmony Woods Road, Owings Mills, MD 21117.
