Matriarchs of a New Nation: Jewish Women in Colonial America and the Chesapeake
Long before Emma Lazarus welcomed immigrants to the “golden door,” her grandmother, Grace Nathan, was writing eloquent letters about life as a Jewish woman in the new United States. From the bustling port cities of Philadelphia, Charleston, and Savannah to the Chesapeake towns that would later become part of the nation’s capital region, Jewish women in Colonial-era history balanced tradition and adaptation, family and enterprise, with the realities of a young nation. In this presentation, Jewish studies Professor Andrea Lieber introduces the lives of remarkable women like Grace Nathan, Abigail Minis, and Miriam Simon Gratz, alongside lesser-known women of Alexandria, Georgetown, and Richmond. Their stories still resonate today as we consider the enduring power of women’s voices.
