Young Families Challah Bake-Along
Friday, January 1, 2021 • 17 Tevet 5781
11:00 AM - 2:30 PMZoomStart your New Year off with fresh-baked, homemade challah for Shabbat.
Calling all 0-5 year olds and their parents, join us in your kitchen to make challah for the first Shabbat of 2021. Challah is an essential (and delicious) part of welcoming Shabbat and an easy ritual to perform with young children. Roll up your sleeves, put on your aprons, and get ready to learn everything you "knead" to know about engaging your whole family in Shabbat prep.
We will meet in two stages:
11:00am-12:00pm: Join us with your kids to make dough. Click here for our challah recipe. We’ll demonstrate fun, age-appropriate ways to engage your child(ren) in measuring ingredients, mixing, and kneading your dough. Take a lunch break while the dough rises and join us in the afternoon for stage two!
1:30-2:30pm: It's time to braid and bake! Children can help you punch down and roll out the dough or, if it's naptime, parents can return for this stage solo. We'll share tips to make Friday nights engaging for your family and look forward to hearing some of your own favorite childhood memories of Shabbat.
To fully participate, you'll need:
1 tbsp yeast
¾ cup warm water
1 tsp salt
2 eggs (1 beaten for glaze)
2 tbsp vegetable oil (or sub safflower)
2 ½ - 3 cups bread flour (or sub all purpose)
1 tbsp honey (optional)
Pinch of sugar (optional)
Large mixing bowl
Measuring cups (wet and dry)
Teaspoon and tablespoon measures
Pastry brush
Baking sheet
Parchment paper (optional)
Stand mixer & dough hook (optional)
Whether it's your first time making challah or you are a whiz at the six-strand braid, we hope you'll join us. Register below to receive the Zoom link.
