So You Want To Talk About Race book discussion
Sunday, April 18, 2021 • 6 Iyyar 5781
4:00 PM - 6:00 PMZoomWe invite you to begin or continue on your personal racial equity learning journey by participating in a three-part facilitated book discussion of So You Want to Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo. Together we will practice having open and honest conversations about policies and practices that perpetuate racial and social inequities. Facilitated by Judith Cabelli and Beverly Moses.
The three-part book discussions will meet Sundays from 4-6pm:
April 18 4-6pm (chapters 1-3)
May 23 4-6pm (chapters 4-10)
June 13 4-6pm (chapters 11-17)
Participants are encouraged to purchase or borrow the book to read the designated chapters in advance of each session, but reading is not essential to participate. The Fairfax County Public Library has unlimited e-books and audiobooks available to borrow. Participants will ideally participate in all three sessions. Participation will be capped at 20 to enable discussion.

The Fast of the Firstborn (Ta’anit Bechorim) commemorates the horrific tenth plague that God inflicted on Pharaoh and the Egyptian people. In recognition of this moment, firstborn Jews fast on Erev Pesach. As this is a minor fast, there is a widely practiced exemption: Judaism allows anyone who attends a religious feast to forego fasting. It is customary to hold a celebratory meal on the completion of study of a piece of text, called a siyyum (conclusion). Whether you are a firstborn relieving yourself from the pre-Pesach fast, or anyone else simply looking to learn a little, come join us for the siyyum. After the siyyum, we will celebrate with a light breakfast. -
